During stormy conditions life on the Lightship was intolerable; there were long periods of calm when the sailors wove baskets. These rattan baskets were then sold for utilitarian purposes back on Nantucket. There were small berry baskets and larger gathering or household storage baskets.

These nesting baskets, which measure from 3” to 10”, may have oak or cherry staves and bases. The handles are attached by brass ears. A nest will take about nine months for completion.

Individual round baskets ranging from 2" to 14" are avaliable.
