When sailors retired from lighthouse duties, many continued to ply their basket making craft on shore. They taught their children and neighbors. They could often be found sitting around wood stoves during the bleak Nantucket winters weaving or carving handles for their baskets.

This 2001 design incorporates a Swiss musical movement into a 5" round lided basket. The basket is of cherry and cane with an ivory scrimmed knob.
