South of Nantucket are treacherous shifting shoals. Because no lighthouse could be built in this area, the No.1 Nantucket New South Shoal, a lightship, was established in the mid 1850s. During the times between standing watch and climbing the masts to clean and fill the lamps, crewmembers wove some of the finest Nantucket Lightship Baskets of their time. The lightship period ended in 1905.
